Arts Educational School’s Sixth Form present this year’s BTEC Musical; the satirical comedy, Urinetown – an uproarious send-up of greed, love, revolution (and musicals!), in a time when water is worth its weight in gold...
It’s quite a bold choice for a show featuring a range of youngsters aged eight to 21. But with a timely message about the environment at the heart of the narrative, its core message is one that resounds with the younger generation.
“The show’s title is famously provocative,” explains director Fiona Kuhn-Thompson. “But at its heart, Urinetown the Musical is about climate change. And for those worried it could be rather serious, it’s packed full of fantastic songs and lots of laughs for all ages.”
The three-time Tony award-winning show is set in a fictional town that finds itself desperately short of water after 20 years of drought.
Fiona continues: “In the wake of David Attenborough’s The Blue Planet, it feels a great time to do this show. Despite the constant downpours in June, it’s predicted that we’ll have to cope with more frequent droughts. Urinetown doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but amongst all the fun, it does ignite great questions about a future where water will be more scarce.”
