Book now to see Giles Havergal’s adaptation of Graham Greene’s famous book ‘Travels With My Aunt’ – a play full of humour and surprises!
Although Greene is probably best known for works such as ‘Brighton Rock’ and ‘Our Man in Havana’, he wrote ‘Travels With My Aunt’ in 1969 and it was soon made into a film starring Maggie Smith who would go on to receive an Oscar nomination for her performance.
Henry Pulling, retired bank manager and keen dahlia grower from Southwood, attends his mother’s funeral where he meets his long lost eccentric and glamorous Aunt Augusta. Until now Henry has led a relatively quiet and sheltered life but things are about to radically change – Augusta is a lady with a shady past and a moral compass that does not always point north! As the two become acquainted, Henry is pulled into Augusta’s world of adventure and endless possibilities and they travel extensively across Europe and into South America meeting a colourful array of people and finding themselves mixed up in some dubious and often compromising situations.
Recently revived in 2013 at the Menier Chocolate Factory, this fast paced, witty and faithful adaptation by Giles Havergal was originally written for four men playing 24 characters regardless of age, gender or ethnic background. In this production, 7 actors perform all the characters ranging from the unorthodox Aunt Augusta to English and Turkish policemen to seaside fortune tellers and CIA agents; there’s even an Irish Wolfhound!
‘Travels With My Aunt’ is being performed at the Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames from 15-18th July 2015.
