Opened by Queen Victoria in June 1886, Royal Holloway was founded by Thomas Holloway, a wealthy entrepreneur and patent medicine manufacturer, solely for the further education of women. The College became part of the University of London in 1900 and in 1985 merged with Bedford College, another pioneering women’s college founded in 1849. This illustrated talk will describe the early years of Thomas Holloway’s life and will highlight some of the significant changes the College has seen through the 20th century to the present day.
