Sir Edward Clay was a diplomat for 37 years. He headed the UK’s diplomatic missions in what had been – and remains - the Commonwealth’s first and longest broken state – Cyprus – and in Uganda, Rwanda (during the genocide), Burundi and Kenya. Diplomats usually operate discreetly, for quiet diplomacy suits them and their hosts - But sometimes speaking out is necessary. Sir Edward reflects on his experience from campaigning (notoriously) in Kenya on corruption and on other issues some governments regard as their private internal affairs.
