The Piper of Hamelin is a children’s opera by the British composer, John Rutter to a libretto by Jeremy James Taylor, founder of the National Youth Music Theatre. It is both witty and moving in telling the exemplary tale of the greed and avarice of the townsfolk of Hamelin, and the tragic punishment brought upon them by the strange travelling Piper who they double-cross after he has saved their city from a plague of rats.
