Sylvia has a dilemma: how does a woman get to know the man she’s engaged to? Disguising herself as her own maid is certainly one way to do it. And it would have been perfect, except that her fiancé Richard has had the same idea: his man Brass will do duty as him. Sylvia’s father can only watch as the couples get entangled. Marivaux’s greatest comedy, Le Jeu de l’amour et du hasard, is translated by John Fowles to the Regency England of Jane Austen in this previously unseen version.
