Join The Poppy Factory on Tuesday 18th Oct to discover the extraordinary history of The Artists Rifles, perhaps the most curious regiment in the British Army.
The historian Patrick Baty will be discussing how a group of painters, architects, poets, sculptors, musicians and actors concerned about a possible French invasion formed the regiment in 1860.
Early members included William Morris, Frederic Leighton and Algernon Swinburne - some of whom were more effective soldiers than others... It was a natural choice for young men of an artistic persuasion in 1914 and after WWII the regiment took an unusual transformation, where many of its early traditions were maintained, in spite of very different times.
