Talk and Preview: The Rise and Fall of the English Switzerland Exhibition at Haslemere Museum

Local historian, Dr Marion Dell, will describe a very colourful chapter in Hindhead’s history from 1880 - 1910. She will explain: how treacherous Hindhead was once considered; the impact of the arrival of the railway through Haslemere: why eminent physicist, Professor Tyndall, christened Hindhead the ‘English Switzerland’; why Hindhead immediately became immensely fashionable, attracting celebrity writers of the day, including Conan Doyle and Bernard Shaw, and, finally, how Hindhead’s popularity led to its fall.
