Icosa Choir and the Santiago Quartet join forces for a concert of rhythmically-charged, Tango-inspired Latin American music on Monday 6th May at 6pm at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford. The combination of choir and string quartet make for an exciting collaboration, extending the performance parameters of their respective musical repertoires. The programme is made all the more special as these professional ensembles are joined by children from St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, Guildford.
The concert features Martín Palmeri’s stunning Misatango (Misa a Buenos Aires) for choir and tango orchestra. Composed in 2016, it has been performed around the world, but is rarely heard in this country. Palmeri fuses the sacred choral Mass setting with the sound of the Tango in a unique combination of voices, string quartet, piano, double bass and bandoneon. The concert will also include works from Santiago Quartet’s Language of the Heart, a recent top ten feature in the classical album charts.
Icosa will perform Mexican Renaissance music alongside a new work by Sheena Phillips and a special commission by Stephen Calver, setting poems in Galician to music. Children from St Thomas of Canterbury School will sing folk songs from Latin America, conducted by Icosa Director, Luke Mather.
Icosa is a professional chamber choir of 20 young singers who have gained a reputation for their versatile, innovative and engaging programmes, performing demanding new works alongside more familiar pieces from pop, folk and classical genres. Since their inception in 2015, Icosa has performed over 50 new works. Find out more about and listen to Icosa at www.icosachoir.com
The Santiago Quartet is a classical ensemble, founded in Mexico in 2005 by Guildford-based cellist Jonny Hennessey-Brown. The group blends the sensuous mood of Tango music with vibrant energy and originality. A striking characteristic of the Santiago Quartet sound is the haunting melodies of the bandoneon, performed by Julian Rowlands, who is regularly heard on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing creating the signature sound of the Tango.
