Davie McDowall is an author and Middle East specialist. His talk will give a historical perspective on the current situation in Iraq and Syria. Suggested donation £10 in aid of the Hope School for refugees in Jordan.
Since 2011, over a million Syrians have fled to Jordan. Only 20% live in UNHCR refugee camps. The rest are in tents or in other poor accommodation with little food and no medical support. Many suffer from medical and psychiatric conditions. Iraq refugees, who have fled from ISIS, are forced to live in very poor conditions too.
There is very little chance of schooling for the tens of thousands of refugee children. A few are allowed to attend Jordanian schools, but the majority are receiving no education at all. This is disastrous for their future, and the future of their countries. They offer their pupils the only chance of an education and a brighter future.
How can we help?
Helping Refugees in Jordan, founded by Catherine Ashcroft, is a network of small Jordanian charities operating from Amman. Run by volunteers, there are no administrative costs. HRJ is supporting a new school, The Hope School, for Syrian and Iraqi refugee children near Amman, and a string of desert schools in the north of the country. The teachers in both schools are trained in Syria and Iraq, and are refugees themselves. These schools act as focal points of community support, in a situation where everyone has suffered great loss and in many cases bereavement.
