Spirit of Invention Festival Day
A unique day out of science-y fun for children and adults alike inspired by our new exhibition, Spirit of Invention. Featuring exciting workshops, hands on activities, demonstrations and experiences for all ages. The jampacked line-up includes Junk Orchestra, Explorer Dome, real life inventors Ruth Amos and Stephen Guy and a whole host of extraordinary inventions.
You can also feed your imagination with delicious treats from Maids of Honour Café and exciting street food from Le Swine, then cool down with mouth-watering ice cream served by Maids on the ice cream bicycle.

• Explore space and astounding feats of human engineering in Explorer Dome’s inflatable planetarium
• Play in our sound garden of reclaimed instruments with The Junk Orchestra
• Help create a record-breaking automaton and make your own peg puppet with inventor Stephen Guy from Fire the Inventor
• Delve deeper in the Spirit of Inventions exhibition with special tours lead by a pair of quirky Victorian inventors
• Discover the extraordinary and quirky Victorian inventions in the collection in our Time Travel Club events. Take part in document workshops for 8-11s and storytelling for 5-7s. Under-5s can have a blast getting messy in our sensory play space
• Get creative with Lego and origami and craft your own invention prototypes
• Find out how we use cutting edge science to preserve and interpret our collection and get a closer look at some of the familiar and unusual designs and patents in our collection
• Take part in fun engineering challenges judged by inventor extraordinaire Ruth Amos from Kids Invent Stuff
• Explore the wonders of waterpower with the London Museum of Water & Steam! Learn all about inventions like the Archimedes Screw, hand pumps and steam engines in the fun Water Movers Science Show where you’ll find out how we get water where we want it to be.*
• Try out the universally fun art of Japanese plant printing with the Royal Institution education team*
• Redesign Wallace and Gromit’s ‘Wrong Trousers’ into the right trousers with the Intellectual Property Office’s Cracking Ideas Competition
