The closing concert of Kingston Arts “Festival of the Voice March 2015” has a nautical theme when Kingston Choral Society performs Stanford’s “ Songs of the Fleet” on March 28th 7.30p.m. at Kingston Parish Church.
The music will quickly take us out into challenging waters when a “great Sou’Wester hurricane came rollicking up the sea” . Equally rousing music includes Elgars Give Unto the Lord , written in the spring before the start of the First World War, and Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs, first performed in 1911 with the composer conducting. The last song, "Let all the world in every corner sing" is often sung as a church anthem and will be familiar to many.
Modern music by Jonathan Dove and Howard Skempton provide contrasting and dazzling - sound worlds. Dove’s Missa Brevis was premiered in 2009 and was part of the BBC's Christmas Day Worship broadcast that same year. The opening section of his Flight of Song gives the choir its first exciting opportunity to perform from a graphic score. In the four sung movements there is subtle word painting and use of harmony to reinforce the rich imagery of the Tennyson texts, resulting in a work of beauty and power.
Andrew Griffiths will conduct with baritone Charles Rice and accompanist William Vann.
