The sensual poetry of the ‘Song of Songs’, one of the Bible’s Old Testament books, is the inspiration for the music of the Epsom Chamber Choir’s spring concert.
This excellent choir revels in the range and beauty of the texts which have inspired composers, both well-known and less familiar, to write some of the most exquisite choral music. ‘Set me as a Seal’ (William Walton), ‘My Beloved Spake’ (Thomas Tomkins and Patrick Hadley), ‘Rise up my love’ (Healey Willan and Howard Skempton) and five settings by Palestrina is just some of the fare on offer.
Conductor Piers Maxim said, ‘This poetry is all about the passion of human love so it isn’t surprising that the ‘Song of Songs’ has proved a rich vein for composers. From across centuries and styles we can compare responses to the beauty of the fervid emotions of these poems. Starting back in the 16th century with both English and continental composers, we take the audience through to today. One of the most beautiful works we’re singing, called ‘Beloved’, is by Helen Williams, who just happens to be a member of the choir!’
