Dorking Dramatic and Operatic Society will present Skylight as part of the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival from Tuesday 29th September to Saturday 3rd October. Skylight tells the story of Tom Sergeant (Simon Openshaw), a successful restaurateur, who visits his ex-lover and former employee, Kyra Hollis (Rosita Gibbons) in her grotty flat in London. Tom is still coming to terms with the death of his wife and seeks consolation from his ex-lover. Kyra’s life has dramatically moved on from her time in ‘Chelsea’s milieu’ and she is deeply fulfilled from her work as a teacher in the East End. Although they are bound together by their love, their values and ideals conflict. They each stand for different worlds, one rallying the self-made man and the creation of wealth and the other backing the corner of the poor and those fighting the day to day struggle for survival.
Director Alex Miller, explains why she was keen to direct the play:
“I have wanted to direct something for DDOS for a long time but nothing was quite right. I had heard of Skylight and after the revival, was so taken by the humanity and the relevance of the piece, I couldn’t walk away. Skylight is one of those rare plays that universalises everything, it won’t exclude you. You will find yourself laughing and crying. One minute you will side with Kyra and then find yourself agreeing with Tom. Not many plays offer this extraordinary mixture of entertainment and thought. This is a must see production with an astonishing cast. I want Dorking to come and see Skylight and understand why this play is regarded as one of the best of its time.”
Skylight will be performed at the Green Room Theatre (behind Dorking Halls) from Tuesday 29th September to Saturday 3rd October at 7.45pm each night. Tickets from £10. Please book now!
