Arthur Ransome in Russia
100 years on from World War 1 and the Russian Revolution, Chobham Festival turns a spotlight on the tumultuous history of the era. The festival’s ChobLit book event is about Arthur Ransome, the classic children’s author of books such as Swallows and Amazons.
Historian Paul Crisp will delve into the author’s involvement in espionage and the possibility he was a double agent, spying for Russia, as well as for Britain.
Ransome was a bohemian journalist with radical leanings, spending much of 1914-18 in Russia and on the Eastern Front. He befriended and married Trotsky’s secretary Evgenia Shelepina.
Spend a Sunday afternoon learning more about the international adventures of the intriguing Ransome over Prosecco and cake in the aisles of St Saviour’s Church at Valley End (the smaller Victorian sister church of St Lawrence, Chobham). Tickets are £10.
