The bell ringers who will mark 100 years since the Armisice with a special three hour peal of bells at St Giles Church Ashtead.
All are welcome to the St Giles’ Choral Six service which will include a robed choir and organ music as well as the poem, ‘For the Fallen’ by Laurence Binyon. This will be followed by a silence, and then moving through themes of love and peace to an act of commitment to peace. There will be refreshments in Ashtead’s Dell Centre after the service.
A very special three hour bell-ringing challenge has been set at Ashtead’s historic St Giles’ church this Remembrance Sunday, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Armistice with over 40,000 rings.
It has been recorded that to mark the Armistice a Peal was rung at St Giles’ Church on 13th November 1918, just two days after the Armistice, one of the first 10 such commemorative Peals rung across the country.
Hoping to recreate the achievement of the Peal at Ashtead in 1918, eight experienced bell ringers – from Ashtead, Epsom, Leatherhead and Ewell - will attempt to ring a very similar Peal from 3pm on 11 November.
