Rembrandt. Self-Portrait at the Age of 34, 1640. Oil on canvas. 102 × 80 cm. National Gallery, London.
As a postscript to the Rembrandt celebrations last year, in this session we will look at how this legendary artist presented himself. From early drawings, etchings and paintings investigating character, expression and emotion, to the late meditations on what it means to be human, this is an endlessly rewarding journey. To stand before his self-portraits is to confront the man himself. Stand long enough and he will speak to you – what will he say to you?
