What is Railway 200?
Railway 200 marks the bicentenary of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, which opened on 27 September 1825 and revolutionised transport by connecting people, communities, and ideas—ultimately helping to shape the modern world.
This nationwide, year-long campaign will begin in January 2025 and celebrate 200 years of the modern railway. Led by a broad partnership of organisations, it aims to honour rail’s remarkable history, highlight its role in the present day, and look ahead to its importance in a sustainable future.
Born in Britain and adopted around the globe, the railway remains a vital force in shaping society. Railway 200 also seeks to inspire a new generation of talent to consider careers in rail, with community groups, industry, and the public all encouraged to get involved.
Visitors are invited to join Hampton Kempton Waterworks Railway during a special celebration weekend as part of this historic milestone.
