This, the first collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, set the standard and rules of musical theatre that are still being followed today. For the first time in American musical history, songs and music were completely integrated with the dialogue. The plot has real depth, dramatic impact and, unusually for the time, was about ordinary people facing real life situations with a political understory : the birth of a new state - Oklahoma.
Set in Western Indian Territory just after the turn of the century, the spirited rivalry
between the local farmers and cowboys provides the backdrop for the love story
between Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a beautiful farm girl.
‘Oh What a beautiful morning’, ‘The farmer and the cowman’, ‘People will say we’re in love’ and ‘Poor Jud is dead,’ are just a few of the musical gems to be found in this sparkling production. Don’t miss it. Come and join in the fun.
