My mother said i should never
Set in Manchester, Oldham, and London, My Mother Said I Never Should is a poignant, bittersweet story about love, jealousy and the price of freedom. The play details the lives of four women through the immense social changes of the twentieth century. Using a kaleidoscopic time structure, Charlotte Keatley’s story focuses on four generations of one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives.
"I wrote it for four women because there are so few plays for women compared to centuries worth of plays for men to act. It is traditional to see men onstage, like Hamlet, who are supposed to represent us all. In this play, it is women who represent us all, and the massive social changes of the twentieth century. I wanted to show how hugely dramatic the ‘ordinary’ lives of women have been. The men are just offstage as the women are in so many other plays." - Charlotte Keatley
My Mother Said I Never Should is a set text on the OCR Schools Examination Board for GCSE English Literature in 2018/19 and a prescribed text on the WJEC board for GCSE English, as well as a suggested text for GCSE and A Level Drama.
