Celia Fiennes - a 17th century traveller
by Marie-Elaine Houghton (Garden Lecturer)
In the late Stuart period Celia Fiennes visited every county in England on horseback, even venturing briefly over the borders into Wales and Scotland. Her journals are a unique record of life at the time, from the newly built stately homes and gardens of relatives and friends to the agriculture, commerce and emerging industries that she encountered along the way.
