On the brink of World War II, nine-year-old Eva is sent to Britain with little more than a suitcase and an identity label, one of 10,000 children evacuated in a rescue mission called Kindertransport. Eva is taken in and raised by a well-meaning English woman. Torn between her German heritage and her need to wipe the experience from her memory, Eva learns to adapt to her new life and her new identity.
Kindertransport moves seamlessly between present time and memory, as the consequences of Eva’s childhood play out many years later. Her story is based on autobiographical accounts and this moving and thought-provoking play tells a captivating story of survival and the challenges and rewards that come when building a new life, resonating strikingly with events facing the world today.
