will Kemp dances in front of a map
An actor, a playwright and a dog walk into a theatre...
The actor is Will Kemp, the biggest international comedy superstar of his generation. The playwright is William Shakespeare, about to become the most famous writer in history. Nobody remembers the dog’s name.
A “horrible history” for all ages, Kemp’s Jig tells the story of what happened after the two Wills argued over a play and parted ways. For Shakespeare it was business as usual, back at the Globe Theatre. For Kemp it was a bizarre publicity stunt to cash in on his popularity and superstar status: He begins a 125 mile Morris dance from London to Norwich, later published in his diary of the event “The Nine Daies Wonder”.
Kemp’s Jig is a laugh out loud, saucy romp through Elizabethan England, placing Shakespeare in a supporting role. The audience enjoys the company of wealthy widows, country lasses, a couple of pickpockets and a bear called Harry. This one-man show was originally performed by its author, Chris Harris in many countries across the globe, at the National Theatre and on TV. Blue Fire’s Steve Taylor has been introducing Kemp to new audiences since we revived the show in 2019.
