The Great War. The trenches near Saint-Quentin, Aisne in Northern France, less than a hundred yards from the German line. R C Sheriff’s beautifully written play is set in the dugout of the officers of a British Army Infantry company and takes place over four days from 18th to the 21st of March 1918, during the run-up to the real-life events of “Operation Michael”. This deeply moving and tense drama reveals the sacrifices made by so many young men during the war, and Sherriff’s characters bring to life the complexities of fear, humorous banter and comradery as they approach their journey’s end.
