J.H. Thompson. Portrait of Charlotte Brontë, 1850s.
When Jane Eyre was first published in 1847, it was declared ‘the best novel of the season’. Ever since, it has been a firm favourite with readers, film-makers and theatre-goers alike. This course will examine the way the novel is structured and what it says about the early 19th century and about a woman’s position in that society. Suggested edition: Oxford World’s Classics.
Time: 10am - 12.30pm. Length of course: 1 Thursday. Tutor: Carol Perrett.
