This course provides a critical overview of psychoanalysis, including its historical development, the science behind it and its social impact. Each week you will be introduced to psychoanalytic concepts, including the unconscious, hysteria and the analysis of dreams. These are discussed in relation to psychoanalysts, including Sigmund Freud and Melanie Klein, and through close-reading of their writings. Week by week, there is an emphasis on understanding ideas so that they might be interrogated further, reflecting on how cultural representations and philosophical understandings have transformed how we approach and make use of psychoanalysis today. Students are encouraged to engage in discussion, reflecting on whether theories remain valid in the world and to ourselves. Importantly, this course does not provide therapeutic support or clinical training; it is intended as a critical theoretical introduction to psychoanalysis. Course costs £28.80
