‘Impressionism’, as it became known, has proved to be one of Europe’s most popular art movements. At the time, however, there was a good deal of resistance to the movement. It was criticised as slapdash, unfinished, with subject matter unfit for respectable society. We will look at technique, subject matter, some of the main protagonists and the movement’s artistic legacy.
