‘Atmosphere In Light’ An exhibition of wildlife by Wildlife, Equestrian, Canine and plein air Impressionist Artist Heather Irvine at The DSWF Gallery.
After gaining a Fine Art Degree, Heather Irvine initially began her career as a professional artist drawing portraits in oil pastels and selling her equine sketches at the likes of Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials.
A volunteer position with the Kalahari Conservation Trust in Botswana and subsequent trips to Namibia and South Africa became a huge artistic influence in her work. Having an avid birder in the family also means Heather is permanently attached to a pair of binoculars, be it abroad or on the doorstep! Sketchbook work and drawing in the field from observation are an inherent part of her working process.
‘I love trying to work as impressionistically as possible. Large blocks of colour and loose brushwork allow me as an artist to be seen with emotion, atmosphere and sense of place being paramount rather than hair by hair detail’. An animal’s gesture, a birds jizz , colour combinations or a memory lead to small initial idea sketches put down quickly in charcoal which then can become larger works be it in oils, pastels and the odd lino.
Heather has exhibited with SWLA, The Society of Equestrian Artists, is an award winner with NEWA and TWASI . In 2012 her painting ‘The Last Winter’ won BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year, she was a finalist and category winner in 2013 also. In 2013/2014 she was shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year having five pieces accepted for the exhibition at the Mall Galleries.
"I am delighted to be exhibiting my work at the DSWF gallery, and I am particularly happy that sales of my work will benefit many of the endangered species that they work so hard to protect.”
