J M W Turner, Crossing the Brook, C.1815, Oil on Canvas, Tate Britain.
Turner is possibly the greatest, most innovative British artist ever. This course explores his early work in depth. We trace his progress from talented teenage topographical watercolourist, to increasingly ambitious oil painter aiming to surpass Claude Lorraine, to a painter transformed by Italian light in the 1820s. Look out for the course on his later work in Spring 2023.
