The Ember Big Band originated as a community band in Elmbridge. It performs regularly, sometimes promoting its own concerts, often supporting other organisations. It also holds `open rehearsals` where everyone is welcome to come along and listen over a pint or two. The line-up, 23 musicians plus three talented singers, performs in styles and tempos ranging from the Great American Songbook to swing, Latin, funk and rock. The band`s musical director is Bill Geldard, one of the UK`s best known trombonists and arrangers. Since turning pro at the age of fifteen, he has played with some of Britain`s most famous orchestras including Ted Heath`s and John Dankworth`s, toured with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jnr. – and also played on the sound track of the first Bond film, “Dr. No”.
