Best known as the mastermind behind Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also a prominent campaigner during the First World War. After witnessing first hand the devastation of bullets and shrapnel when his son was seriously wounded in battle, Conan Doyle became a committed advocate of better armour for soldiers.
