Alastair Sooke in conversation with Antony Penrose
Alastair Sooke, art historian and journalist, will be in conversation with Antony Penrose, son of Lee Miller. Penrose’s connection with Picasso stems from when, as a child, he bit him. Picasso bit Antony back, which marked the beginning of their friendship.
The discussion will not be restricted to biting as it will range over Picasso’s portraits of Antony’s mother, his painting Guernica and its tour of England organised by Antony’s father Roland Penrose. Picasso’s meeting with Lee Miller during the liberation of Paris in 1945 and his survival during the war, and then the post war years, featuring his retrospective at the Tate in 1960 curated by Roland Penrose. In all it will be a conversation that ranges over some of the key points of Picasso’s career, but investigates him as a person, a friend and as a playmate for young Antony.
