Sandro Botticelli, The Birth of Venus (C. 1484–1486). Tempera on canvas. 172.5cm × 278.9cm.
Sandro Botticelli created some of the most memorable images in Western art, including The Birth Of Venus and La Primavera.
A central figure of the early Renaissance, his work reflects the debates on reconciling Christianity with the Neoplatonism derived from the rediscovery of classical art. Throughout a period of turbulent spiritual battles, Botticelli created allegories of astonishing beauty and perfection.
