Wild Food in the UK
Wood Blewit Mushrooms
This course is a simple foraging walk where we will identify a number of edible and poisonous wild mushrooms, fruits and plants.
Banstead is on the very outskirts of London which makes it the perfect place to find mushrooms in large quantities. Due to the underground habitats of fungi being reduced by concrete and tarmac, urban areas in particular tend to see more fruiting fungi which is a useful result and rather fun.
We will meet at 12pm in the Woodman Pub, Woodmansterne. The course starts there with a 20 minute introduction on how to forage safely and sustainably, and a brief of the general countryside codes where they relate to foragers.
Then we’ll set off for a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the area identifying the different edible and poisonous plants, fruits and mushrooms that we come across. We will then go back to The Woodman to discuss and taste our finds over a wild food light lunch.
Ideal for both the total novice and the intermediate forager looking to improve their knowledge, it is also an unusual and informative family outing!
