Pack up a picnic and jump on your bike to witness the wonders that Surrey has to offer this month
Get on your bike

There’s no better time for some free-wheeling fun than during Bike Week (June 9-17; bikeweek.org) and Surrey is the perfect playground. All you need is a bike, a helmet, a puncture repair kit and a pump, and if you’re planning to be out after dark – lights.
1) Best for beginners: The Downs Link. A traffic-free trail that follows the path of a disused railway from Artington to Shoreham-by-Sea, making for fairly flat and safe cycling. Cycle the whole 37-mile route, or pick one or two sections.
2) Best for intermediates: Some road cycling is required for this 15-mile route running through Lingfield and Hurst Green. Not up for the full circular? Catch a train back early at points en route.
3) Best for advanced: Box Hill. Cycle like you’re in the Olympics and tackle the 129m-high climb; the views from the top are worth it.

Pack up a picnic…

Treat yourself to some fine Surrey produce, grab a blanket and enjoy al fresco dining in one of the county’s beautiful, leafy settings
1) Stoke Park, Guildford
Acres to choose from. Tick. A playground for the kids. Tick. There’s even a model boating pond and fitness trail at this Green Flag awarded site – pack more than just a picnic lunch; you’ll want to stay all day.
2) Swan Barn Farm, Haslemere
This National Trust site is a haven for flora and fauna. Work up an appetite with a walk (dogs-welcome) through the pastures, traditional orchards and ancient woodland. The best bit? If you forget anything, you’re, surprisingly, minutes away from the high street.
3) Frensham Great Pond, Frensham
Known for its “secret” beach, this is the spot to visit if the sun’s shining and you fancy a splash. Relax or build castles on the sand, then cool down with some wild swimming in the “excellent”-rated waters.
4) Virginia Water
Amble through The Valley Gardens and admire its floral displays before deciding whether you’d like views of ancient monuments, waterfalls or the lake, while you enjoy your lunch.
5) Box Hill, Tadworth
It was voted one of the best places to picnic for a reason – far-reaching views of the North Downs and sun-catching banks makefor a striking backdropto any outdoors dining.Visit the National Trust website for a range ofwalks to enjoy while you’re at the top.
