I’ve been buzzing with energy this month – it has been a hive of activity. You may remember my writing in the April issue that I was the last journalist to interview celebrated test pilot Capt Eric Brown – the mention ran alongside an article on the lady pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary. Eric used to visit their White Waltham HQ during WWII to have tea with their top lady, Pauline Gower. As a gentleman and a thoroughly modern man, he had great respect for the pioneering lady aviators.
It was thus a great thrill to be asked to host the Royal Navy and Royal Naval Heritage Trust memorial day to Eric, with some 50 historic aircraft on display and in the air in tribute. White Waltham’s ladies would surely have approved!
FASHION DJ
Another fun outing was my being interviewed (for once) by our brand new fashion columnist Emma Gordon – aka Mrs Stylist – on her weekly radio show. Emma was a successful broadcaster before taking time off to have her two girls and then getting into fashion styling and consulting. She shares her tips for elegant dressing on this month’s fashion page (watch this space for the page to be posted online soon) – taken from her Stiletto Boot Camps, where she helps clients to look their best. Enjoy Emma’s fresh ideas and let us know what you think!
ROLL OUT THE RADIO
The radio theme obviously struck a chord with me, as I also took up an offer to go and meet veteran BBC radio broadcaster Phil Jay and his trusty sidekick, Pam Worth from Burnham, who are the duo behind Gulf Radio Services in Cippenham. No mean feat for two septuagenarians. Admirable stuff. Read more here.
COME ON LADIES!
On Emma’s show we chatted about the fun that I have editing the magazine, learning so much about all aspects of women’s lives.
Seeing as I had arrived in my gym kit, conversation naturally turned to the half-marathon training I am doing for this month’s Windsor Running Festival (September 25th). There’s still time to sign up: get those running shoes on and join the likes of Ascot mum Katherine Hardy and her daughter Alexia Limpert-Peers, who were the fastest mum and daughter duo in last year’s 10k Running4Women event (right). Can you beat them this year?
MILES JUPP
Finally, to our cover interviewee, Windsor schoolboy turned comedian Miles Jupp is not only back on Radio 4 this month with a new series of The News Quiz, but is on tour – he plays The Corn Exchange in Newbury (Sept 21) and the Kenton in Henley (Sept 23) as well as London Palladium in the new year (Feb 22) and Guildford's G Live (Feb 1).
