Emma Pritchard discovers the Surrey blacksmith beating metal into shape – keep the home fires burning this Christmas with his work Andrew Brighty has been heating, hammering, bending and twisting metal in Abinger Hammer for 10 years, after leaving a career in the motor industry.
The items emerging from his furnace demonstrate balletic strength and grace, and sometimes take inspiration from the oddest places – a recent art deco gate was inspired by seeing the Chrysler Building in Men in Black 3!
His work includes bespoke gates and railings as well as smaller implements, and demonstrates that functional can be beautiful – he also performs restorations, as with the tijou gates at Petworth House.
Why not add interest to your fireside with a ram-topped poker?
