Tony Brewis is a retired mining engineer who has tunnelled in Gibraltar, mined copper in India and iron ore in Sierra Leone. With consultants Atkins he assessed mining projects in Zambia, Norway, Sweden, Benin and Nicaragua, and spent 3½ years in Mexico building an iron ore processing plant. During 18 years editing Mining Magazine he visited and wrote articles on mines and smelters in the UK, United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, Spain, Zambia, South Africa, India, Japan and Australia. Of relevance to tonight’s talk these included 30 mines and 26 smelters producing copper. In his two-part presentation he will talk about “Copper through the Ages”, taking us from early beginnings in the Bronze Age to its modern-day production and uses. Following the interval, he will then talk about a substance he thinks one of the strangest on planet earth – “Water the Weirdo”.
